Why You Should Never Do Your Own Electrical Work
Every year in Australia, people are killed or seriously injured doing electrical work they were not qualified to do. Some of them thought it was a simple job — replace a power point, install a ceiling fan, move a light switch. None of them expected it to go wrong.
Here is why DIY electrical work is never worth the risk, and what you are actually allowed to do yourself.
What the Law Says
In Queensland, the Electrical Safety Act 2002 makes it an offence for an unlicensed person to perform electrical work. The definition of electrical work is broad — it covers installing, repairing, altering, or maintaining an electrical installation. That includes:
- Installing new power points or light fittings
- Replacing a switch or socket outlet
- Running new cables
- Installing a ceiling fan, oven, or hot water system
- Adding a circuit to your switchboard
- Any work inside the switchboard
Even replacing a damaged plug on an extension lead technically requires a licensed electrician in a workplace setting, though replacing a plug top on a household appliance is one of the few things you can legally do yourself.
There is no grey area here. If the work is on the fixed electrical installation of your home, you need a licence. Period.
What You Are Allowed to Do
A few things fall outside the definition of electrical work:
- Changing a light bulb or fluorescent tube
- Resetting a tripped circuit breaker or safety switch
- Replacing a fuse wire in an old ceramic fuse holder (though if you still have these, you should be upgrading your switchboard)
- Plugging in and using appliances
- Installing low-voltage garden lighting with a plug-in transformer
The guideline is simple: if it involves taking the cover off something that is hardwired into the wall, you should not be touching it.
The Risks That Are Not Obvious
Most people who attempt DIY electrical work are not electrocuted. That does not mean the work was safe.
Poor connections cause fires. A loose terminal screw creates resistance. Resistance creates heat. Heat creates fire — maybe not immediately, but months or years later, after the homeowner has long forgotten about the power point they installed themselves. Loose connections are one of the most common causes of electrical fires in Australian homes.
Incorrect cable sizing. The cable that runs your lights is not the same as the cable that runs your oven. Use undersized cable for a circuit and it will overheat under load. The circuit breaker might not trip before the cable insulation melts.
Missing earth connections. Every circuit needs an earth. An earth fault without a working earth connection means the metal case of an appliance can become live at 240 volts — and the circuit breaker will not trip because there is no path for the fault current to flow. The next person who touches it completes the circuit.
Insurance will not cover you. If your house burns down and the fire investigator determines the cause was unlicensed electrical work, your home insurance is void. Every policy has an exclusion for illegal work. You lose everything.
The Ceiling Fan Example
Installing a ceiling fan is one of the most common DIY electrical jobs that goes wrong. It looks simple — mount a bracket, connect three wires, attach the blades. But:
- The existing circuit might not be rated for the additional load
- The mounting point must be strong enough to support a spinning weight of 8 to 12 kilograms
- The wiring connections must be mechanically secure and electrically sound inside a confined space above the ceiling
- If the fan includes a light, there is an additional circuit to manage
- The isolation switch requirements changed in the 2018 Wiring Rules — older installations might not comply
A licensed electrician does this in under an hour. It costs a few hundred dollars. The alternative is a fan that falls, shorts out, or starts a fire in the roof space.
What It Actually Costs to Hire an Electrician
Most people who do their own electrical work are not doing it for the thrill. They are trying to save money.
Here is what residential electrical work actually costs in the Wide Bay:
- Replace a power point: $120–$200
- Install a new power point: $180–$300
- Replace a light fitting: $120–$250
- Install a ceiling fan (supply and install): $350–$600
- Switchboard safety switch upgrade: $400–$800
- Full switchboard replacement: $1,200–$2,500
These are not trivial amounts, but they are also not thousands of dollars. For the cost of a weekend away, you get work that is compliant, insured, and guaranteed.
The Bottom Line
Electrical work is one of those things where the cost of getting it wrong is so much higher than the cost of getting it done properly that the decision should not be a decision at all.
You would not perform dental work on yourself to save money. Do not do your own electrical work.
